If your GLP-1 has stopped working

Your weight loss stopped.
You didn't.

The plateau isn't willpower running out. It's your body defending the weight it thinks it should be — and it will keep defending it. There are ways past that. Find out in two minutes which one fits you.

The pattern we see every week

Weight on a GLP-1, month by month

Month 1 Month 6 Month 12 The plateau What's next
Most people on a GLP-1 lose steadily, then stall. When the medication stops, much of the weight tends to return. That isn't failure — it's what the medication does on its own.

Experience

22+ years practicing bariatric surgery. Board certified in general surgery, fellowship trained in minimally invasive surgery.

Standard of care

Dr. Lin has helped shape national standards of care through his work with ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) and SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) — the standards other surgeons follow.

Every option, not one

Medication, surgery, nutrition and long-term follow-up under one practice. We're not selling you the only thing we happen to offer.

The candidate check

Six questions. Then a real answer.

This tells you whether you're likely to be a candidate and which program fits — surgical, medical, or both. It takes about two minutes and there's no cost or obligation.

Question 1 of 6

This questionnaire is an educational screening tool, not a diagnosis, and it doesn't guarantee candidacy or insurance coverage. Only a consultation can determine that. Please don't enter detailed medical history here — this form is not a patient portal.

What happens after you submit

Three steps. No surprises.

People tell us the not-knowing is the worst part. So here is exactly what follows.

STEP 01

We call you back

Within one business hour, at the time you told us works. A real person from the practice, not a call center. If we miss you, we'll try again — we won't leave one voicemail and give up.

STEP 02

You come in and talk

A free consultation with our team. We go through your history, what you've already tried, your insurance, and every option that's genuinely open to you — including the ones that aren't surgery.

STEP 03

You decide, on your timeline

If you want to move forward, we handle the workup and the insurance paperwork. If you want to think about it, that's a normal answer. Nobody is going to pressure you.

Being straight with you

This isn't right for everyone.

We'd rather tell you now than waste your afternoon.

You're likely a good fit if

  • Your GLP-1 has plateaued, or the side effects have become too much to keep going.
  • You've lost coverage for the medication, or can't sustain the cost indefinitely.
  • You've been trying for two or more years through diets, programs or medication.
  • You have a weight-related condition — type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, joint pain, fatty liver.
  • You want something durable rather than another thing to stay on forever.

It's probably not, if

  • You're looking for cosmetic body contouring. That's a different specialty and we'll point you to one.
  • You want to lose a modest amount of weight quickly for an event.
  • You're not able to commit to follow-up visits and vitamins long-term. Surgery is a tool, not a finish line, and it works because of what comes after.
  • You haven't tried anything yet — in that case medical weight management is usually the right place to start, and we do that too.

The questions people actually ask

Before you call.

Does needing surgery mean I failed?

No. Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease, and your body actively defends a higher weight through hormones you don't control. Nobody says a person with diabetes failed at making insulin. Surgery changes those hormonal signals in a way that diet and medication alone generally can't sustain.

My GLP-1 stopped working. Why?

Plateaus are expected, not exceptional. Your body adapts — metabolic rate falls, hunger hormones adjust, and the same dose does less. Sometimes a dose or medication change helps. Sometimes it means the medication has done what it can on its own. That's the conversation to have at a consultation.

Can I stay on my medication if I have surgery?

Often, yes. Medication and surgery aren't opposing choices — for many patients they work together, and some people use a GLP-1 before surgery, after, or both. What that looks like depends on your history and is decided with you.

How safe is bariatric surgery?

Modern laparoscopic bariatric surgery has a complication profile comparable to gallbladder removal or a knee replacement, and it's one of the most studied operations in medicine. Dr. Lin will go through the specific risks that apply to you, honestly, at your consultation.

Will my insurance cover this?

Many plans cover bariatric surgery when medical criteria are met, though requirements vary and some plans require a supervised weight-management period first. We'll check your specific plan and handle the authorization paperwork — it's one of the main things we do for you.

How long does it take?

From first consultation to surgery is commonly two to four months, depending mostly on what your insurance requires. Medical weight management can usually begin much sooner.

What if I'm not a candidate for surgery?

Then we tell you, and we talk about what is appropriate. We run a medical weight management program with a dietitian and a nurse educator, and plenty of our patients never have an operation.

You've already done the hard part.

You tried. It worked for a while. Now find out what comes next.
